These three areas reflect the areas used in healthy development reviews by health visitors when children reach two to two-and-a-half years of age<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society. They are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Literacy<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mathematics<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Understanding the world<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expressive Arts and Design<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these areas of learning children are taught languages of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the children learn:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The Characteristics of Effective Learning<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;are embedded in the teaching. They are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Playing and exploring \u2013 engagement<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finding out and exploring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Playing with what they know<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being willing to \u2018have a go\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Active learning \u2013 motivation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being involved and concentrating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keeping trying<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enjoying achieving what they set out to do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Creating and thinking critically \u2013 thinking<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having their own ideas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making links<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choosing ways to do things<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Observations take place daily and significant achievements are recorded in the children\u2019s Profile&nbsp;Folder. Parents are invited to make comments and observations about their child and this is included in the child\u2019s Profiles. The children in the Reception class are assessed throughout the year using Development Matters Ages and Stages.
