Your child\u2019s reading experience is much more than the reading book which comes home from school. Reading is happening all the time in a classroom and in the school. It is taught in specific Guided Reading and English lessons, but children are practising and using their \u2018reading\u2019 constantly across all subjects too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents can support this \u2018reading journey\u2019 through regular reading at home. Reading to and with your child every evening for at least ten minutes can make a dramatic difference to a child\u2019s achievement within school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some top tips for storytime:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Make it a treat \u2013 introduce each new book with excitement<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Make it a special quiet time \u2013 cuddle up!<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Show curiosity in what you\u2019re going to read<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Read the story once without stopping so they can enjoy the whole story. If you think your child might not understand something say something like \u2018Oh I think what\u2019s happening here is that\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Chat about the story e.g. I wonder why he did that? Oh no, I hope she\u2019s not going to\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Avoid asking questions to check what they remember<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Link to other stories and experiences you have shared e.g. this reminds me of\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Read favourite stories over and over again \u2013 encourage your child to join with the bits they know. Avoid saying \u2018not that story again!\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Use different voices \u2013 be enthusiastic!<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Love the book \u2013 read with enjoyment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
